In the center of the story are twins Alison and Ollie Ronan, who survived a common grief as a child, which separated them for ten years. When their mother Mary Ann learns that Ollie does not consider herself a girl, she tries to shoot her "abnormal" daughter, and the twins, in defense, kill her. After the incident, Ollie is sent to a center for troubled teens, and the local police chief adopts Alison.

After a while, already matured, having changed his gender and name, Tyler returns home to a small town in Alaska, with firm intentions to help his sister get rid of the burden of the past and sell his mother's old house. Sorting out old things in the house, the twins realize that the attempt to kill their own child was not due to his transgender, there is something more behind it. From this moment, the investigation begins in the game, and new gameplay features appear, which Dontnod, by tradition, associated with mysticism.

As an unusual mechanic, the developers added a kind of telepathic connection between Tyler and Alison: with the help of it, the twins hear each other's thoughts, and long-forgotten events appear in the form of holograms. But because the characters remember their mother in different ways, their memories are also different. So, Alison sees her mother softer and more caring, and Tyler remembers the existing tyrant. The ending of the game and the attitude of the twins to each other will directly depend on the choice of certain events and memories.

In Tell Me Why, there is also a small love line between Tyler and Alison's good friend Michael. This can result in either a good romance or a strong friendship.

Dontnod also did a great job on the visual style of the game. A huge number of scenic spots, well-designed, beautiful characters and indie music do an excellent job of creating the atmosphere of that very American hinterland. Screenshots
