The story, as in the reference, is presented through the environment, descriptions of objects and rare dialogues. You have to play in the role of a humanoid creature that can take over some bodies. There are four of them and they are hidden in locations. Each shell represents a specific class and differs in both armor and characteristics and abilities. Leveling is also different for everyone. Switching between them is allowed in the local hub, or at the expense of consumables. At the same time, no one forbids passing the game in one guise.
Death also remained in the tradition of the genre. After the defeat, you return to the nearest save location, and all experience points remain at the place of death. The role of bonfires is played here by the Pale ladies. After talking with them, the enemies are revived. The main difference is that there is a second chance here. As soon as the life bar is at zero, the lost one is thrown out of the armor. Then there are two options: either continue to fight in your own body, which, although it has high endurance, but is very fragile, you either have time to move back into the armor and the battle will continue.
The shields were replaced by the ultimate ability to turn into stone. Fossilized Flesh completely absorbs damage, but takes time to recharge. Also, with a timely parry, it becomes possible to conduct a powerful counterattack.
The levels in Mortal Shell represent corridors that are dark and confusing. It would be difficult to navigate by them with a map, but it is not here either. Globally, the area can be divided into swamps, catacombs, an ice gorge and an air castle. Each of them has a local boss. After killing him, darkness will fall on the area, and opponents will become stronger.
